Through TLPA, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Reaches Out to Professional Drivers for Marketplace Enrollment

(Washington) - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced a commitment from the largest association of for-hire transportation fleet operators to support enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace of affiliated drivers, transportation workers and the public.

The collaboration leverages the relationships of the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA), a national trade group with some 100,000 drivers affiliated with the organization’s member fleets. Nationally, the full for-hire local transportation industry (taxicabs, limousines/liveries, airport shuttles, paratansit and non-emergency medical transportation) provides over one billion passenger trips each year.

“We’re very pleased to be working in partnership with the TLPA’s leadership and its members across the United States,” said Kevin Counihan, Director and Marketplace Chief Executive Officer. “Their ability to reach so many Americans is a real asset in encouraging more people to review their options and make informed decisions about their health coverage.”

TLPA President Bill Scalzi said: “By working with HHS, the TLPA is able to help tens of thousands of drivers who operate as independent businesses, giving them the security that comes with affordable health care. This will go a long way in helping drivers understand the options they have for coverage that works best for themselves and their families.”

Open Enrollment for 2017 coverage began on Nov. 1 and closes January 31, 2017. During Open Enrollment, HHS is collaborating with companies supporting freelance workers, entrepreneurs and independent contractors. TLPA commits to informing drivers and riders about key enrollment deadlines, promoting Open Enrollment through TLPA’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as through its newsletter to members. Through this collaboration, HHS will reach more individuals who are likely to qualify for Marketplace coverage and can shop for health insurance on a transparent, user-friendly website where they can compare plans and see financial assistance that lowers the cost of coverage.

The deadline for January 1st coverage is December 15th. Visit HealthCare.gov to enroll today.
